UK Visa Waiver Ended

Read This First: UK Travel Is Not Visa-Free

On 19 July 2023, the UK Home Office ended visa-free travel for Vanuatu passport holders, citing misuse of the citizenship-by-investment scheme. As a UK resident, a Vanuatu passport will not let you skip UK entry requirements. Since British citizens can already travel visa-free to far more destinations than Vanuatu offers, travel convenience generally isn't the reason UK residents pursue this citizenship.

Why UK Residents Still Consider It

Our UK clients typically fall into a few categories: internationally mobile families wanting a backup passport independent of any single country's future immigration policy, individuals relocating frequently across Asia or the Gulf who value Vanuatu's Asia-Pacific visa-free network, and clients interested in the tax-neutral status of Vanuatu citizenship as part of a wider financial plan involving offshore structuring or succession planning. A number of our UK clients are dual UK/other-nationality holders already, for whom adding a third, independent passport is a natural extension of an existing diversification strategy.

Since Vanuatu permits dual citizenship, UK nationals do not need to renounce their British citizenship to acquire it. The two are held independently, and your UK passport remains your primary travel document for UK, EU and US-related travel.

Eligibility for UK-Based Applicants

Standard Requirements

18+, ACRO or Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)-style clean criminal record check, and evidenced source of funds.

UK-Specific Documents

UK passport, HMRC-issued documents or UK bank statements, and a UK utility bill or council tax statement are commonly used for proof of address and funds.

Documents You'll Typically Need as a UK Applicant

Valid UK (or other current) passport
ACRO or DBS police clearance certificate
6 months of UK bank statements
Council tax bill or tenancy/mortgage statement
P60 or self-assessment summary for income evidence
Birth/marriage certificates for any dependents

Tax: What Changes and What Doesn't

Acquiring Vanuatu citizenship does not, by itself, alter your UK tax residency, domicile status, or HMRC filing obligations. Your UK tax position continues to be governed by where you live, work and hold assets under UK tax law, not by which additional passport you carry. Clients interested in the tax-planning angle of Vanuatu's tax-neutral status should speak with a UK-qualified tax adviser about how it interacts with their specific residency and domicile position; we can make introductions where useful but do not provide UK tax advice ourselves.

Common Mistakes UK Applicants Make

Assuming visa-free travel applies

Some clients arrive expecting UK/EU visa-free access; we always correct this before any commitment is made.

Requesting DBS checks too late

Standard DBS certificates can take a few weeks; ordering early avoids becoming the bottleneck in an otherwise fast process.

Incomplete source-of-funds trail for investment income

ISA, pension or investment-account statements should be accompanied by a clear explanation of how funds were originally earned.

UK-Specific Questions

How Vanuatu Compares to Other Citizenship-by-Investment Programmes

UK residents researching second citizenship often compare Caribbean programmes like Dominica, Grenada and St Kitts & Nevis, or property-based routes like Turkey. It's worth understanding roughly where Vanuatu sits before assuming any one option is automatically the right fit.

Caribbean Programmes (Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts & Nevis)

Historically comparable or somewhat higher starting contributions than Vanuatu, with processing typically taking several months rather than weeks. Several Caribbean nations have also faced their own UK/EU visa-waiver scrutiny in recent years.

Turkey Citizenship by Investment

Requires a real estate purchase (historically around $400,000) rather than a government donation, with a multi-year hold requirement and a different risk profile tied to property values.

Vanuatu's core advantage for UK-based clients is speed and simplicity: no property to manage, no multi-year holding period, and the fastest processing timeline of any major programme. Its main trade-off, as covered above, is that it does not offer UK or EU visa-free access following the 2023 suspensions, a limitation several Caribbean programmes have also faced to varying degrees. We're happy to walk through current pricing and access across every major programme during a consultation.

Is Vanuatu Citizenship Right for You?

Not every UK enquirer ends up proceeding, and we'd rather have that conversation honestly upfront than after you've paid a due-diligence fee. Before booking a call, it's worth weighing your own situation against a few simple markers.

Good Signs Vanuatu Citizenship Fits

  • You want a backup passport independent of UK policy, not extra UK travel access
  • You already understand the UK visa waiver was suspended in 2023
  • Your source-of-funds trail is clean and well-documented in the UK
  • You're comfortable that this doesn't reduce UK tax obligations

Reasons to Pause First

  • Your main goal is easier UK, EU or US travel
  • The contribution would stretch your finances rather than diversify them
  • You haven't yet ordered your DBS/ACRO clearance certificate
  • You're exploring this primarily for someone else's benefit, not your own

If the left-hand list describes you and none of the right-hand items apply, a consultation is likely to be worthwhile. If you're still unsure, book the call regardless. Helping you reach a clear answer, even if that answer is "not now," is part of what we do.

“I appreciated that the consultant told me upfront a Vanuatu passport wouldn't change anything about my UK travel. That honesty is why I trusted them with the rest of the process.”
